Jennifer Lopez party starter hit “On the Floor” featuring Pitbull has officially surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify As of May 7, 2026. It is her first song to reach the milestone and Pitbull’s sixth billion streaming song.
Released on February 8, 2011, through Island Records as the lead single from Lopez’s seventh studio album Love?, the song marked a major commercial comeback for Lopez and became one of the biggest international hits of her career.
Produced by Moroccan hitmaker RedOne, “On the Floor” was written by RedOne, Pitbull, Bilal Hajji, Kinnda Hamid, Achraf Janussi, Gonzalo Hermosa, Ulises Hermosa, and Teddy Sky. The song famously interpolates “Llorando se Fue,” the Bolivian composition written by Gonzalo and Ulises Hermosa of Los Kjarkas, which later became internationally famous through Kaoma’s 1989 hit “Lambada.”
Lopez described the song at the time as an evolution of her signature sound, combining her roots as both a singer and dancer while modernizing her late-1990s dance-pop identity.
The recording sessions took place during 2010 at Cove Studios in New York, Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, Al Burna Studios in Florida, and Et Al Indamix in the Dominican Republic. RedOne handled production, instrumentation, programming, vocal arrangements, engineering, and editing, while Kuk Harrell contributed vocal production and arrangements.
“On the Floor” debuted at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Lopez the highest debut of her career at the time. It later climbed to number three on the chart, becoming her biggest Hot 100 hit as a lead artist since “All I Have” in 2003. The single also reached number one on the US Dance Club Songs chart and peaked at number five on the US Pop Airplay chart. By April 2013, the song had sold 3.8 million digital downloads in the United States alone and was certified 3× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
In the United Kingdom, “On the Floor” debuted at number one on the Official Charts Company singles chart on April 3, 2011, with first-week sales of 130,000 copies. It remained at number one for two consecutive weeks and became Lopez’s third UK number-one single. By May 2012, UK sales had already surpassed 822,000 copies, and as of later certification updates, the song achieved 3× Platinum status from the British Phonographic Industry, representing more than 1.8 million certified units in the country.
Globally, the single topped charts in 37 countries and became one of the most successful songs of 2011. It reached number one in major markets including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, and Canada. In Spain, the song spent an enormous fifteen consecutive weeks at number one, while Germany saw the track remain atop the singles chart for six weeks. In Finland, it held the number-one position for nine weeks, becoming Lopez’s longest-running chart-topper there.
The song ended 2011 as one of the year’s biggest records worldwide. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry reported that “On the Floor” sold more than 8.4 million copies globally during 2011 alone, making it the best-selling single by a female artist that year.
The music video, directed by TAJ Stansberry and choreographed by Frank Gatson Jr., premiered on March 3, 2011, simultaneously on Vevo and during an episode of American Idol. The visual portrayed Lopez as the glamorous queen of an underground dance club and became an instant viral success. By September 2025, the video had accumulated more than 2.6 billion views on YouTube, making it one of the most-watched music videos ever released by a female artist from the 2010s.
