The Jamaican music fraternity mourns the loss of DJ Kovert, a promising young disc jockey who passed away at the University of the West Indies Hospital on Saturday, following complications from a motor vehicle crash which took place on the Washington Boulevard in St Andrew days earlier.
His passion, talent, and remarkable ability behind the turntables made him one of the emerging names to watch in dancehall.
Born Matthew Nelson, at just 19 years old, DJ Kovert, life has been tragically cut short, leaving behind memories of a young man whose musical journey was filled with extraordinary potential.
A former student of Ardenne High School, DJ Kovert began making a name for himself at an early age.
Singer Tarrus Riley posted “Jah Jah” after hearing the news of Kovert’s death.

His growing reputation was evident during Ardenne High School’s Student Choice Awards, where fellow students enthusiastically identified him as their favourite DJ. One Grade 9 student proudly declared, “Miss, he’s already considered an international DJ!”
Kovert accomplishments include securing first place in the St. Mary’s SunCity 104.9 FM High School Disc Jockey Competition in 2024.
He also made an appearance on TVJ Smile Jamaica as a guest DJ.
Those words reflected the admiration and respect DJ Kovert had earned among his peers, even at such a young age.
His mixes demonstrated a level of skill, creativity, and musical understanding far beyond his years. He possessed the ability to connect with listeners through music, showcasing the instincts of someone destined to make a meaningful contribution to Jamaica’s entertainment industry.
Sadly, the world will never get to witness the full extent of what he could have accomplished.

Though his journey ended far too soon, the impression he made on those who heard his mixes, supported his craft, and believed in his dreams will not be forgotten.
To his family, friends, former schoolmates, supporters, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, we extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time.
