Global music icon and Barbados National Hero Rihanna has paid an emotional tribute following the passing of The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, celebrating the life and legacy of the cricketing legend who inspired generations across the Caribbean and beyond.
In a heartfelt message, Rihanna described Sir Garfield as a towering figure whose influence extended far beyond the cricket field.
“Today we lost a legend and an icon. The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, the greatest cricketer this world has ever seen.”
She reflected on Sir Garfield’s extraordinary achievements, noting that at just 21 years old, he became the youngest man to set the record for the highest individual score in Test cricket—a remarkable feat that remained unbroken for 36 years. She also honored his distinguished career, recalling that he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and was one of the last living National Heroes of Barbados.
Rihanna, born 1988, shared a personal memory of how Sir Garfield inspired her childhood, saying:
“Inspiring all of us as kids, even me, playing cricket in the cemetery trying to keep up with my brother. I’m busting all my shins.”
She expressed gratitude for having had the opportunity to meet the cricket icon through Barbados’ Prime Minister.
“I’m just so grateful that I had the honor to be introduced to him by Prime Minister Mia Mottley.”
They both attended the momentous Republic Day ceremony on November 30, 2021, when Barbados officially transitioned to a republic and Rihanna was officially conferred with the title of National Hero.

Extending her condolences to those mourning his passing, Rihanna added:
“To his family and loved ones and cricket lovers all over the world, I hold you close in my heart during this time.”
She concluded her tribute with a message celebrating Sir Garfield’s enduring legacy.
“Sir Gary’s legacy will live on forever, a light and inspiration to us all. Barbados loves you eternally, Sir Gary.”
In réponse to the tribute Mis Motley shared on Instagram, “Thank you to The Right Excellent Robyn Rihanna Fenty, National Hero of Barbados, for this beautiful tribute to our beloved Sir Garry. It is deeply moving to hear one National Hero honour another, and I will always treasure having introduced the two of you. In this moment of farewell, Barbados is especially mindful of the blessing of a National Hero still among us.”
Sir Garfield Sobers is widely regarded as one of the greatest all-round cricketers in history. His remarkable accomplishments, humility, and lifelong service to Barbados earned him the nation’s highest honor, ensuring his legacy will continue to inspire future generations both on and off the cricket field.
