Shenseea Cries Out To Kanye West To Mentor Her “Creative Direction”

Kanye West, Shenseea

Dancehall hit girl Shenseea is calling out to Kanye West to help her with her career. This singer tweeted the request on Wednesday, “I want @kanyewest to mentor my creative directions”  followed by the Face Exhaling  emoji depicting she is exhausted.

The two have worked together in the past on West Donda album for Billboard hot 100 singles Ok OK Pt. 2 and Pure Souls.

Shenseea has always professed her love for the billionaire music producer and designer ever since she worked with him and says he “treats her like real family.”

In March the Jiggle Boss told L.A. Leakers’ host, Justin Credible and DJ Sourmilk , “I love Kanye, you know just seeing him on social media and then being around him is totally different, as with everybody but he is really in a good way.” she said. “He is definitely a true living inspiration, like I love Kanye. The love that he shows me, the way that he embraces me, pulls me in and make me feel like yo I am a part of the team, I love that. He treats me like real family.”

She also said she likes Kanye West’s working process and that she almost didn’t make the album.

“I was there watching people like ‘yow, he didn’t even put me on the album’ and I was like, ‘trust me, I almost didn’t make the album either,’” she said.

She found out that two tracks, OK OK Pt 2 which peaked at No. 12 and Pure Souls, which peaked at No. 52 on the Billboard charts made the cut when the album was released.

“I love it because it’s so unpredictable but I don’t like it because I don’t even know,” she continued.  “And then I ended up on two? I never saw that coming at all.”

Shenseea’s contribution to West’s Donda album earned her a Grammy nomination for Album Of The Year at the 64th Annual Awards. She did not show up to the awards due to in her words “scheduling conflict,” and neither did Kanye who was reportedly banned from the ceremony.

Shenseea was spotted in the studio under the guidance of multi-platinum producer Sean “Diddy” Combs via an instagram post by the dancehall princess’s label A&R @Dizzycleanface.

Dizzy posted several pictures of the two in the recording booth with the caption:

“Sometimes you have to start over and come back harder @shenseea can’t stop won’t stop @diddy

On the cusp of her debut album release in March and the release of Lick and other features with American artists, dancehall deejays Alric and Boyd gave the dancehall princess advice “not to leave her roots.”

The DJ duo were speaking at an event held at the US Embassy dubbed “Star Spangled Sit Down” hosted by media personality Debbie Bissoon.

Bissoon posed the question to guests Alric and Boyd: “Shenseea wants to step out of her (root) genre, she has taken on a very pop sound..do you think that will work in her favor?”

To which the 30 year radio DJ veteran Boyd drew examples from Lady Saw who did her fair share of collaborations at the height of her career.

“Lady Saw when she did her collabs with everybody else she was still dancehall, Bounty Killer same thing, Beenie Man same thing, Shaggy same thing, so you are saying you are not dancehall anymore? Who are you influenced by at this point? Who is influencing you to make that decision? If you not Jamaican anymore you can just shed you  ‘Jamaicaness’ like that and say ‘ok I am not Jamaican, I am not dancehall?”

His DJ partner Alric then chimed in, “I am glad you mentioned Lady Saw because when you talk about collaborations and going far outside of your root genre nobody has done it further than Lady Saw. She went rock.

She had a tune with No Doubt which was an award winning tune, Grammy winning tune and she never leaves her roots.”

Her album subsequently debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart after selling only 4,900 units during its first week of release.  This includes 800 copies in pure album sales according to data provided to World Music Views from Billboard’s sales tracker Luminate (formerly known as MRC DATA).

The feature heavy album has sold just over t 20,000 units to date after an elaborate marketing rollout and the support of the record label.

Shenseea has said she is restarting her career, only this time with experience.

She told Canadian online show host Brandon that she is not feeling the love from home and from the dancehall and the reggae community.

“ If I am being completely honest, they know what I am trying to do, so it’s like as you said before they wanna keep me to themselves in dancehall, so it’s like a lot of people being rebellious, to be honest against it.” The pop hopeful said. She went on to say “In time everybody will come around, because that’s how it started when I just came on the scene, people were saying Romeich(her former manager) was forcing me into the industry, now they don’t want me to leave the industry.”

The Jamaican singer collected a gold plaque for the single Blessed which surpassed 40,000 units in Canada.

Meanwhile Shenseea, 25, is nominated for her first MTV music video award. Her single R U That featuring 21 Savage from her debut album Alpha is nominated for “Push performance of the year”.

Shenseea is the first to be nominated in that new category and only the second Jamaican woman to be nominated for an MTV Music Video Award. She joins a slew of other Jamaican acts to be nominated in the past including Lady Saw who was nominated for Best Pop Video for her collab with No Doubt titled Underneath It All.

Bounty Killer, won Best Pop Video and Best Group Video in 2002 with No Doubt for Hey Baby, Sean Paul, was nominated for Best New Artist In A Video and Best Dance Video for Get Busy in 2003, and Best Dance Video for Temperature in 2006, Elephant Man, who was nominated for Pon Di River in 2004, and OMI, was nominated for Song Of The Summer for Cheerleader in 2015.

The Interscope Records artist next single Rain, produced by ATL Jacop and featuring Skillibeng is set for release on Friday.

She is also featured on Scottish producer Calvin Harris’ album ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2’ set for release August 5. The song is titled Obsessed and also features Grammy nominated singer Charlie Puth.
