More than four decades after its original release, “Could You Be Loved” by Bob Marley and the Wailers is now officially certified 3× Platinum in the UK.

According to the British Phonographic Industry, This milestone signifies sales and streaming equivalents of 1,800,000 units as measured by the Official Charts Company on May 1, 2026.

Originally released May 16, 1980 under Island Records, the track served as the lead single from their twelfth and final studio album, Uprising.

The song was written in 1979, reportedly while Marley was on an airplane experimenting with guitar ideas. Musically, it stands out as a fusion of reggae and disco—an innovative blend that helped broaden Marley’s global appeal.

Upon its release in 1980, “Could You Be Loved” reached the top 10 in multiple European countries, including Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

The song’s crossover appeal brought it into dance and soul charts, peaking at No. 6 in the US, Marley’s only song to do so.

Cultural Impact and Recognition

Over time, “Could You Be Loved” became one of Marley’s most enduring hits. In 1984, it was included on the iconic greatest-hits album Legend, and has surpassed 1.4 billion streams on Spotify.

In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked the song No. 363 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, recognizing its lasting influence in popular music.

More recently, in March 2025, King Charles III selected the song as the first track on his Apple Music program The King’s Music Room, created to celebrate Commonwealth Day. This choice highlighted the song’s continued cultural significance decades after its release.

Music Video and Continued Popularity

Although the song was released in 1980, its official music video was not issued until 25 July 2022, when it premiered on Marley’s YouTube channel.

Even decades later, the song continues to chart globally, including a reappearance on the Billboard Global 200 in 2024, demonstrating its timeless appeal.

The song has been covered and performed by various artists, notably Joe Cocker, who released a version in 1997 that reached No. 1 in Hungary.

Additionally, Marley’s children, including Damian and Ziggy Marley, have frequently performed the song, keeping its legacy alive across generations.
