Dawn Penn’s “You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)” has been certified Platinum in the UK.
According to the British Phonographic Industry, the track—produced by Steely and Clevie—has surpassed 600,000 equivalent units in streams and sales in the United Kingdom, as measured by the Official Charts Company. It is now the highest-certified solo reggae song by a female artist in the country, having previously earned Gold certification on May 13, 2022.
The song’s journey spans decades. Penn first recorded it in 1967, but re-recorded it in 1968 after producer Coxsone Doddidentified an issue. It was revisited several times in the early 1990s, with the 1993 version produced by Steely and Clevie ultimately becoming the breakthrough hit.
Released in 1994, the track spent 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 3 on the UK Official Singles Chart.
Written by Penn and inspired by her own heartbreak, the song draws partly from Willie Cobbs’ 1961 track “You Don’t Love Me,” with additional credit to Bo Diddley.
Over the years, its cultural impact has continued to grow, with appearances in films and major campaigns. Most recently, Calvin Klein featured the song in a menswear campaign starring Idris Elba, bringing the timeless reggae anthem to a new generation.
