Following the release of two remixes last week; one with Travis Scott and another with Marshmellow, Tyla cracks Billboard’s Hot 100 top ten with “Water.” The catchy song which surpasses 200 million streams on Spotify spends eight consecutive weeks on the chart and it is the South African singer’s first top ten as she breaks the record; for the highest charting solo song by an African female artist on the Billboard Hot 100 in 65 year history.
The Travis Scott Remix charts at 174 in Sweden and 84 in South African on Apple Music and debuts at No. 96 on Spotify Local Pulse New York chart. While the original “Water” song slips down to No. 20 on Global Spotify chart with 19,194,255 for the week ending November 23. Billboard costs streams for all versions of the song as one.
“Water” now surpasses “Pata Pata” by Miriam Makeba which peaked at No. 12 in 1967 and the song is the first ever Top 10 solo on the Billboard Hot 100 by An African artist in the 21st Century.
Tyla dances in the shoes of fellow South African Jazz trumpeter and composer Hugh Masekela whose 1968 song “Grazing in the Grass” was the only other African solo song to break the top ten on the chart.
Hugh died in 2018 and many of his compositions were about fighting the oppressive apartheid regime in South Africa. He is most known for “Bring Him Back Home” calling for Nelson Mandela to be released from prison became an international anthem for the anti-apartheid movement.
