Kelly Clarkson is putting a Brooklyn store on blast after claiming she was treated like Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman, with an employee allegedly assuming she couldn’t afford the merchandise.
The Grammy-winning singer took to X on Saturday, October 10, to share her frustrating experience at Art of Play in Brooklyn, revealing that she had made a special trip to the store with plans to spend some serious money.
“Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy,” Clarkson began.
However, things apparently took an unexpected turn when she felt she was being judged by someone working at the establishment.
The singer claimed she “literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it” and was told the employee “could find something comparable for me.”
Clarkson made it clear that the interaction had cost the store a major purchase.
“Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale,” she fired back.
But it was her comparison to the iconic 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman that made her complaint particularly memorable.
In the film, Julia Roberts plays Vivian Ward, a woman who finds herself navigating the luxurious world of Beverly Hills after meeting wealthy businessman Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere.

During one of the movie’s most famous scenes, Vivian visits an upscale boutique on Rodeo Drive, hoping to buy herself some new clothes. However, the saleswomen judge her based on her appearance and refuse to help her, assuming she doesn’t belong in their expensive store.
The humiliating encounter becomes one of the film’s defining moments.
Later, Vivian returns to the same boutique dressed in glamorous designer clothing and carrying shopping bags from other luxury stores. She confronts the employees who previously dismissed her, famously telling them, “Big mistake. Big. Huge!”
Clarkson appeared to draw a direct parallel between Vivian’s experience and her own treatment at the Brooklyn store.
“But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman,” she wrote sarcastically.
“For sure, check it out 👎,” she added.
Like Vivian, Clarkson suggested she had been underestimated as a customer despite being prepared to make a substantial purchase.
